My candid thoughts about teams and leadership.

Taking Control of Your Career Arc

When is the best time to plant a tree? According to the ancient proverb, the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. Supposing you didn’t have the foresight or resources to plant a tree decades earlier, the second best time is right now.

When is the best time to take control of the trajectory of your career? Right now!

According to the proverb, the best time to take control was when you were at the start, preferably before you (or your parents) invested in your first or second major or before that first or second ill-fitting job. It would have been good to get ahead of things before you got married, settled into your house, or had kids. It definitely would have been wonderful to have taken control before you found yourself in the middle of an unwanted or unplanned transition or before you were looking back over a largely unfulfilling career.

The second best time to take control of your career is today.

If you’ve ever spent weekday hours daydreaming about the work you really want to be doing, or if you’ve experienced the sobering reality of finding yourself out of a job, you know what it feels like to lack control:

“I haven’t updated my resume in eight years!”

“I wish I had kept in touch with more people because my network is so small.”

“What tools and techniques have changed since the last time I looked for a job?”

“I have no idea how to market myself.”

“How do I demonstrate my skills to potential employers and will they transfer to a new job?”

“How is this all going to end?”

Control. Take it. Keep it. Do everything possible to cling to it. If there’s one word that sums up the people who are the most successful in career planning and transitions, it’s control.

You may be just beginning a career that is completely in front of you. You may be in the middle of your most fruitful years. Or, you might be looking back and wondering what you’ll do when you’re no longer reporting to the office each day. Wherever you find yourself in the arc of your career, today is the day to begin to take control of the way you’re spending the majority of your waking hours.
